PTOWN CHURCH GUTTED BY FIRE

PROVINCETOWN, January 25, 2005
– A spectacular fire gutted Saint Peter The Apostle Catholic Church on Prince Street in Provincetown this morning. A fire alarm alerted firefighters about 6:30 AM and smoke was pouring from the building when they arrived shortly thereafter. A second alarm was struck on arrival. Provincetown firefighters battling huge snow piles made a valiant effort to contain the blaze to the rear of the church but the balloon construction and gusty NW winds proved too much. Ice quickly coated everything and everybody including Firefighter Daniel Notaro. A third alarm brought in firefighters from across the mid and lower Cape. They were successful in keeping the flames from jumping to the Father Henry Dahl’s rectory next door. No injuries were reported. The State Fire Mashal’s office was on scene investigating the cause although it does not appear suspicious possibly electrical. Stunned parishioners watched in horror as the flames ravaged their church. They have already vowed to rebuild. Services will be held at the adjacent Parish Hall building in the interim. Several religious items including a tabernacle and an over 100 year old statue of St. Peter were salvaged.
