Provincetown Artist: Pat de Groot

Each day she would get in her kayak and paddle out to the breakers, where flocks of cormorants gather on the rocks. Then, while looking at the birds through binoculars from a tiny boat that was never still, she would use a laundry marker to draw them. Because she held the binoculas in one hand, which put her in closer visual proximity to her subject matter, de Groot forced herself to directly connect looking with drawing. It was an extreme premier coup situation, close to that of a jazz musician having to perform a solo. She either got her subject down or she didn't. Under these conditions, there was no turnig back, no possibility for revision or change.
